My name is Lisa Black and I am the wife of a very supportive, wonderful husband and the mother of two beautiful children.  Although I birthed both of my children naturally, my experiences were completely different.  With my daughter, Hailey, my labor was long, painful, and totally out of my control.  So when I discovered I was pregnant with my second child,  I began exploring the use of hypnosis in childbirth.  That is when I discovered HypnoBirthing.  Through the use of HypnoBirthing, I was finally able to experience the beautiful, calm birth that I had always wanted.  Because of this experience, I decided to become a HypnoBirthing Practitioner.

The following is my HypnoBirthing Story:

On the morning of October 21, 2001 at about 2am , I awoke to the sensation of my water releasing.  I continued to rest and by 6am I started to feel some mild surges.  By 8am , they were consistent, but still mild.  I mentioned this to my husband and we decided I should call my doctor.

Since my water was continuing to leak, the nurse suggested we go to the hospital.  We took our time getting ready and arrived at the hospital around 11am .  My surges were still regular, about every 5 minutes, but as soon as I was situated in my room, they began to subside.

The first suggestion that my doctor made was to start Pitocin.  I requested that I be given time to move things along naturally.  My nurse was aware of our birth preferences and my desire to birth my baby naturally using HypnoBirthing.  Although she was not familiar with this technique, she was very open minded and supportive.

My husband started the Rainbow Relaxation tape, I got comfortable  and I began visualizing my baby coming to me.  Within the hour my surges had resumed.  We decided to take a long walk around the hospital and we even stopped to buy a “Big Sister” t-shirt for our daughter.

Once we returned to the room, I made myself comfortable again and continued to use the relaxation and visualization techniques I had learned in my HypnoBirthing classes.  At this point, I was feeling very confident and excited.  I didn’t feel any pain, just mild pressure through the surges.

As time progressed, there were a couple times when I started to doubt my capability and fear set in.  During those  times, I started to tense up and feel some pain, but my husband was right there to reassure me and get me back into a relaxed state.  Before I knew it, I heard the doctor say that he would be right outside in the hall when I was ready to push.  After the next couple of surges, I knew the baby was ready.

The upper portion of my body was completely numb, all I could feel was this tingling sensation throughout my whole body.  I opened my eyes and told my husband that I was ready.  My doctor returned to the room, told me I could birth the baby wherever I felt most comfortable and during the next surge, I began to breathe my baby down.

After only two more surges my son was born at 3:47p.m. , just in time to watch the Arizona Diamondbacks clinch the National League Championship.  The whole birthing process went by so fast.  I could hardly believe it.  The nurses were amazed at how calm I was and they all wanted to learn more about HypnoBirthing.  For my husband, the experience was a true gift.  He was an active participant throughout the whole process.  HypnoBirthing claims to produce a calm baby, and in the case of Jake this was completely true.

Thank you for allowing me to share this story with you and for choosing HypnoBirthing.  I look forward to sharing with you the wonderful techniques to obtaining the natural, safe, calm, beautiful birth you are expecting.

Happy Birthing,

Lisa A. Black
